Some opportunities are filled through referrals, direct outreach, or internal networks before a broad public search. A relevant, respectful cold email can complement normal applications.
Why Cold Emails Work
- Bypass the ATS entirely
- Reach decision-makers directly
- Less competition than job boards
- Show initiative and hustle
- Create opportunities that don't exist yet
The Anatomy of a Great Cold Email
Subject Line (Most Important)
Your email won't get opened without a compelling subject:
What Works:
- "Quick question about [team/project]"
- "[Mutual connection] suggested I reach out"
- "Loved your talk on [topic] - quick question"
- "[Specific skill] engineer interested in [company]"
What Doesn't:
- "Job Inquiry"
- "Looking for opportunities"
- "My Resume Attached"
Opening Line
You have 5 seconds to hook them:
Good:
"Your blog post on distributed systems at scale changed
how I approach caching at my current company."
Bad:
"I hope this email finds you well. My name is John and
I am a software engineer looking for new opportunities."
The Ask (Be Specific)
Don't ask for a job directly:
"I'd love 15 minutes to learn how your team approaches
[specific challenge]. Would you be open to a brief call
next week?"
Your Credibility (Brief)
"Quick context: I'm a senior engineer at [Company], where
I led our migration to Kubernetes, reducing deployment
time by 80%."
